Senior Planner

Department: Construction
Location: Calgary

Description: The Senior Planner reports to the Director, Construction & Development. As a member of the Construction & Development Team, the Senior Planner is responsible for all aspects of development planning for the REITís in-house multi-family residential projects. This position will support the Construction & Development division in its role as one of the REITís growth engines; developing purpose built rental projects across Canada.


  • Prepare and execute all planning related activities and provides analysis, research and other input for all development planning related matters.
  • Manage all aspects of development applications -pre-application meetings, zoning by-law amendments, development and building permit applications, clearing of conditions, variance applications, etc.
  • Assist with land acquisitions, including initial site identification and analysis, preparation of offers, and subsequent due diligence
  • Aid in the selection and management of design consultants
  • Ensure that application timelines and all municipal and statutory requirements are met.
  • As part of the property development process, this position will assist with the development of real estate projects by providing planning perspectives, feasibility analysis and managing the municipal planning process


  • A Bachelorís Degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a Masterís (preferred) Degree in Planning from an accredited University program recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) as fulfilling the requirement for membership
  • Minimum of ten yearsí experience in the planning profession
  • Membership in CIP and APPI, or candidacy in working towards achieving full membership status
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of planning principles and processes. Experience in land development planning across Canada is an asset
  • Experience conducting research, preparing a variety of reports, and making recommendations on various planning projects with an aptitude for problem solving and analyzing information
  • Ability to lead and manage a diverse range of planning projects and consultant teams
  • Thrives in a team environment, can be an integrator between disciplines, and divisions and enjoys being involved with several projects at any given time
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to travel throughout Canada for work
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, ArcGIS and CAD programs such as AutoCAD is an asset
